Granny Smith apples are available year-round and are a cooking favorite for their tart taste and firm texture that holds up well when cooking. McIntosh apples have a slightly softer flesh that is perfect for cooking down into pie fillings and sauces.
Stay away from the Red Delicious whenever you can (they’re just boring and you know it) and save the other ones for enjoying out of your hand.
