The Yummy Supper Cookbook: 100 Fresh, Luscious, and Honest Recipes from a Gluten Free Omnivore
Out of all of the ways the food bloggers inspire, it’s the story of how they came into this career that fascinates me the most. At the beginning of Erin Scott’s new, stunning cookbook, Yummy Supper: 100 Fresh, Luscious & Honest Recipes from a {Gluten-Free} Omnivoreshe shares her journey growing up in a food-centric family to becoming a necessary cook at home to raising her own kids in an unpicky household that celebrates the best of what’s around them. Through the latter part of this journey, Erin began documenting her passion for cooking (and photography) on her award-winning blog Yummy Supper. As part of the NoshOn.It Featured Blogger family (you can see her recipes that we’ve featured here) and after reading Erin’s blog over the past few years, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book.

The thing that struck me most after flipping through this book was how right Erin was in putting {Gluten-Free} within parentheses in the title. The fact that all of these recipes happen to be gluten free is a secondary, almost unimportant detail compared to how yummy every single recipe sounds. In fact, as someone who doesn’t often seek out gluten free recipes, I nearly forgot that this was even an intention of the book as I got lost in earmarking about 75 pages (and completely defeating the purpose of earmarking).

What stands out is the vibrance, the freshness, the compassion, and the love that went into creating every single one of these recipes. I mean, come on, duck fat roasted potatoes? Pistachio lamb kebabs? (Note: we made these last week and they were outstanding) Parmesan polenta with garlicky rapini and black olives? This is just plain, good food that so happens to be gluten free.

At the same time, Erin has the unique ability to make elegant not only look, but feel, effortless. After living in the Bay Area for several years myself, that’s the best way I can capture the essence of the area’s cuisine. What exactly is Bay Area cuisine? Effortlessly elegant. It’s by no means fancy food, but at the same time, it isn’t always “just pop it in the oven” simple. By using fresh, seasonal ingredients and unique flavor combinations (the fennel seed, rosemary, and garlic rub on the Oven-Roasted Pork comes to mind), Erin transforms what would other wise be a boring, normal, ho hum type of dish into something special. Something dinner party worthy. Something date night worthy. I personally plan to slice that pork and stack it between two slices of crusty, local, decidedly gluten-filled bread (sorry Erin!) for a killer sandwich.

Also on my immediate to-make list from the book:

  • French Lentils with Preserved Lemon, Tarragon, and Creamy Goat Cheese (meatless main or side dish!)
  • Wild Salmon with Dill Butter and Fennel (trying to eat more seafood weekly)
  • Bourbon-Braised Short Ribs with Brown Sugar and Coffee (!!!)
  • Simple Almond Torte with Berries & Creme Fraiche (elegant, just sweet enough, and gorgeous)
