Appreciate the stuffed side of pizza with fluffy homemade dough and the cheesy, saucy goodness of these two filling possibilities: BBQ Chicken and Sausage & Peppers. It’s hard to argue with the appeal of portable pizza pockets, especially when eaten fresh out of your own oven. Rebecca, Recipe Hunter

Calzones 2 Ways: BBQ Chicken and Sausage & Peppers

Put your pizza in a pocket.

A pocket of pizza is a pretty loveable item, especially when you throw in Jonathan’s step-by-step photos on how to make from-scratch calzones. From his homemade red-sauce for the sausage and pepper calzones to the folding process, he shot and explained it all. Making dough can seem like a big deal, but pizza dough can be prepared the night before, making prep a snap.  American calzones are most typically seen with fillings involving a combo of red sauce, meat / vegetable, plus cheese, but the dough is your canvas – experiment with your filling combos, it’s half the fun! Jonathan gives two possibilities to get you started: the classic Italian-American sausage / pepper and a less Italian BBQ chicken. Calzones are also a great meal for satisfying different eaters – just provide several filling options for the crowd.

This recipe is part of 2014 #PizzaWeek, a week-long blogging event celebrating cheese, carbs, and cheese on top of carbs.
